Alyssa Watkins’s five goals powers Proctor/Hermantown past Luverne

Senior forward Alyssa Watkins scored five goals, including three when Proctor/Hermantown was skating short-handed, to lead the No. 3-seeded Mirage to an 8-0 victory over Luverne in the second Class A quarterfinal of the Girls Hockey State Tournament on Friday, March 26 at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

 

Watkins entered the state tournament with 22 goals and added to that with two even-strength tallies in the first period. She completed the natural hat trick with a short-handed goal early in the second period then added two more shorthnded goals in the third period. She had a team-high 11 shots for the Mirage (19-0). Senior defenseman Ella Anick had a goal and an assist while senior forward Macy Sieger also had two points, both on assists.

 

Sophomore forward Kamryn Van Batavia paced Luverne (16-5-0) with a team-best five shots.

 

Third-seeded Proctor-Hermantown (19-0) plays second-seeded Warroad at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Class A semifinals at Xcel Energy Center.

 

The Warriors (20-1) advanced with a 10-0 victory over Rochester Lourdes/Dover-Eyota in Friday’s first quarterfinal.

 

The match sets up two northern teams from the opposite sides of the state that vanquished their opponents with shutouts.

 

The No. 2 seed Warriors posted records for shots on goal in a game (74) and in a period (34) and dominated Rochester Lourdes (9-9).

 

Senior forward Genevieve Hendrickson, a Ms. Hockey Award semifinalist, opened the scoring a hat trick, giving her 30 goals this season.

The winner will advance to meet either Gentry Academy, Vadnaise Heights (18-2-0) or Chisago Lakes, Lindstrom (19-2-0).

Chisago Lakes 4, Mound Westonka 3

The fourth-seeded Chisago Lakes Wildcats beat No. 5 seed Mound Westonka of Section 2A. Lawry’s goal came on the third power play of the third period for Chisago Lakes (19-2-0). Junior Dani Burgen tied the game 1:18 before that to complete her sixth hat trick of the season. It’s the first state quarterfinal victory for Section 5A Chisago Lakes in four trips. The Wildcats won consolation titles in 2010 and 2012.

 

Gentry Academy 4, River Lakes 1

Top-seeded Gentry Academy had its hands full early on with unseeded River Lakes.   Section 4A Gentry Academy defeated River Lakes 4-1 in a penalty-filled game at Xcel Energy Center.

River Lakes took a 1-0 lead late in the first period, but that lasted only 1 minute, 32 seconds before Gentry Academy tied it.
