Mirage opens state against Luverne

 

 

The No. 3 seeded Proctor-Hermantown girls hockey team will enter the state hockey tournament as the only undefeated team in Class A.

 

The Mirage, (18-0) will face Luverne, 16-4, Friday, in the Quarterfinals March 26 at 1 p.m. at the Xcel.   Luverne was the top seed in Section 3A.  The beat #2 Mankato East 7-2 for the championship.

 

Luverne, on a six-game winning streak entering the state tournament, is making its second consecutive state tournament appearance.

 

Proctor/Hermantown surrenders just 0.78 goals per game.

 

The winner will advance to meet either Rochester Lourdes, (9-8) or #2 Warroad (19-1) on April 1 at 11 a.m.  Rochester, seeded 2, upset #1 Albert Lea 3-2 in the 1A finals.  Section 8A top ranked Warroad dominated #2 Thief River Falls 6-0.

 

A new champion will emerge in this class. It is also the first time since 2006 that neither Blake nor Breck qualified for the state tournament. In that span since, the two schools won a combined 10 championships.

 

In the lower bracket its River Lakes (13-5-2) against #1 Gentry Academy (17-2) and #4 Chisago Lakes (18-2) vs #5 Mound Westonka (14-2).

 

The championship game will April 3 at 11 a.m.
