Bay View School sets ALICE drill Tuesday

Bay View School sets ALICE drill Tuesday

Bay View School will conduct their final ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate) Lockdown drill for the year.

For this ALICE drill, we are going to have staff and students evacuate the building and walk to our “Rallying Point,” which is the old hockey arena at the Fairgrounds on 9th and Boundary Avenue,” Bay View Elementary Assistant Principal John Awsumb said.

The exercise is being coordinated with the Duluth Police Department, who will have a presence along our walking route. Kindergarten classes will walk to the water tower on Vinland, and the school's Little Rails (Early Learning) will evacuate to the edge of Bay View’s parking lot. Wheelchairs will be available for students who may need them, and these students will not be expected to go all the way to the “Rallying Point.”

A major part of ALICE drills are performing scenarios,” Awsumb explained. “At the elementary level, it is mostly discussion based, with our teachers taking the lead in facilitating discussions and helping students understand their ALICE options for remaining safe in case of an intruder. This ALICE drill will be focusing on Evacuation, and I will pre-choreograph this with our staff before we execute the drill.”

School safety is a top priority at Bay View, and our staff and students have responded well to the four ALICE drills we’ve conducted so far this year,” he added. “This is our first year of ALICE implementation, and it has been successful because of the dedication and seriousness that our school community brings to this effort. Thank you for your support as we practice this ALICE evacuation drill to provide the safest environment possible in the face of the unthinkable.”
