New "CD3" watercraft cleaning station installed at Pike Lake

Operators of boats and other watercrafts on Pike Lake have a new tool to help protect the lake from Aquatic Invasive Species. A "Clean. Drain. Dry. Dispose." - or CD3 - watercraft cleaning station now is installed at the public boat launch on Pike Lake. A public demonstration of this new user-operated tool will be offered Wednesday, July 12, at 4 p.m. at the boat launch, which is located just off Midway Road at 5798 Town Hall Road.

The CD3 station is funded through the St. Louis County AIS grant program for a two year pilot prevention project. Canosia Township is a partner in the project, and maintains the boat launch where the CD3 station is installed.

The station includes a wet/dry vacuum, blower and multiple tethered cleaning tools, along with easy to follow instructions. It is equipped with lights, so users can operate it under any condition.

Pike Lake already has been invaded by zebra mussels, so anyone using the lake will want to clean their watercraft before heading to another lake or river. Boaters also can use the CD3 station prior to entering the lake to prevent the introduction of other invasive species such as

spiny waterfleas and Eurasian milfoil.

The CD3 station at Pike Lake is one of only five in Minnesota, and is the only one located outside of the Twin Cities metro area. Canosia Township opted to participate in the CD3 station pilot program to prevent the spread of additional AIS at Pike Lake, and from Pike Lake to other waterbodies.

It is one of nine projects funded by the County in 2017 using dollars allocated by the Minnesota State Legislature. More information about they County's AIS Prevention Plan can be found online at stlouiscountymn.gov/ais.
